PEDP May Newsletter 2019

Lovely to see several of you moms at our “Sip & Shop” event last week! We hope that you found that fun Ellie Kai outfit, a sparkly new bracelet or perhaps a beautiful piece of pottery. All three vendors donated 20% of their proceeds from the event. Some of the orders are still coming in but we think we raised about $1500 for the Program. Yay!

It’s hard to believe we are entering the home stretch of the school year! Still so much to do!

CURRICULUM

Our theme for May is Money. I know, the first thing we all think of is spending money, however, we plan to be focusing on a lot more than spending. We’re going to be talking about saving, setting short- and long-term goals, and giving to charity, too. We also will be practicing counting money and making change. Looking for a way to extend our theme at home? You’ll find some great ideas here: https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/how-to-teach-kids-about-money
Our theme is going to end with a special event “Step into the Real World” where the kids will have a chance to visit our bank, spend (pretend) money, and donate to a charity among other things. Fun, fun!

PEDP FOR 2019-2020

Thank you to all who have filled out the application online. If you have not, there are still some openings. Remember to send the application fee in separately to complete the application process. The board will be voting on the budget this month. As soon as we have the tuition rates set, we will be billing for the tuition deposit and our plan is to do this through the Jackrabbit program.

MINNOWS MESSAGE (Gr. K-1) from Kim Ryan, Minnows Coordinator

Early Minnows

The Early Minnows had a great month with our theme of music!  We made musical instruments like tambourines and harmonicas and learned about the different music notes that you would find on a staff.  We also did some fun dancing like the Tooty Ta dance and, of course, Baby Shark!! Our next theme, money, will be educational and fun!

The Early Minnows will have a field trip in June to wrap up a fun year!  More details about that will be coming soon!

Late Minnows

The Late Minnows have been channeling their inner musician with many projects like castanets, thumb pianos and drums!  Our next theme of money will teach the minnows about earning, spending and saving!

The Minnow clubs have been so much fun: Tie Dye, Bingo, Cooking and Magic!  I hope the kids in my club have been wowing you with their magic tricks!!

Kids Cooking Green starts this month.  It will certainly be filled with yummy food and a good education on using local ingredients!

BARRACUDA BUZZ (Gr. 2-3) from Joanne Malouf, Barracudas Coordinator

The Barracudas have had a busy month. There’s been a lot of rain, but we’ve still managed to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures. During the music theme, the kids made pan flutes, illustrated songs, wrote their own songs and did some freeze dancing. In science, the kids learned about the planets and then helped create papier maché planets. Next month, the Monday Barracudas will have clubs.  Dylan will be helping kids with their basketball skills.  Children in Carol’s group will help write and then perform a short play.  Those in my club will hand sew a stuffed elephant.  We met with our clubs, briefly, to go over expectations and outcomes and the kids seem excited about their club.  Though the year is winding down, we still have a lot going on.

SHARK TALES (Gr. 4-5) from Rachel Bastarache, Sharks Coordinator

The Sharks have been enjoying this month’s theme, Music! We have been singing, dancing, even song writing. There is no question there is an abundance of musical talent in this creative group of kids. On Thursdays this month, we have been joining up with the Minnows for some very entertaining Karaoke. It was nice to see the different age groups mixing and having so much fun together.

Swimming in to next month, the Sharks will have money on the brain. We have many different projects and activities planned that will help them learn how to budget and save. Also, we will test their knowledge of how much things actually cost. A fun game of Price is Right!

The Sharks talked about how much they enjoyed dressing up and showing their Shark spirt during our Shark Week in March. So, we have decided to have a “Super Hero Shark Day” on May 14th.  They can dress up as whoever they feel is their favorite hero. The staff will have some fun group games to go along with the day as well and maybe even a special snack!

It’s hard to believe we are almost in the home stretch of the school year but we still have plenty of fun ahead.
