PEDP May Newsletter 2017

April was a super fun month! Our “Best of Broadway” shows were fantastic! Thanks to all who showed their support with donations of time, money, and attendance at our performances! We really appreciate it. We also raised a good amount of money bringing us very close to our fundraising goal for the year. Kudos to actors, parents and guests!

The Ellie Kai event last night was a fabulous Mom’s Night Out! (Ellie Kai outfit pictured above!) We had a great turnout and a lot of the ladies enjoyed some terrific retail therapy! I heard several moms say how comfortable the clothes were and how easy it was to wear them. There really was something for everyone. The hardest part was deciding which ones to buy! For those of you who missed the event, please go ahead and contact Suzanne Winton (suzwinton@gmail.com) who is more than happy to set up a time for you to see the clothes. You won’t be sorry and you’ll be helping out our Scholarship Fund at the same time!

CURRICULUM

Our theme this month will be Farm Life. This is always a fun theme for the kids as they generally really love animals.

EARLY RELEASE DAY!

The next early release will be held on Thursday, May 11th. The Minnows will be taking a field trip to the Capron Zoo in Attleboro! (The permission slip was e-mailed yesterday.) Visitors to the zoo can immerse themselves in the warmth and wonder of a tropical rainforest, be awed by the roar of their lion pride, or simply enjoy the wonders of animals from all over the globe. Cost is $20.

The Barracudas and Sharks will join for a special event: Outdoor Field Day! The children will be able to partake in all sorts of fun activities such as: Sidewalk Chalk Mural, Pool Noodle Challenge, Hula Hoop Hoopla, and Jumping Rope.

 FIELD TRIPS

May 2nd (Adventurers): Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

May 2nd (Explorers): Flower Arranging with Temple Shalom Garden Club—this will actually take place AT PEDP

May 16th (Adventurers): George’s Island Tour, Boston

May 23rd (Explorers): McGolf, Dedham

May 19th (Friday K-5 Programs): CVS, West Newton

Many of you will recall that we are using a portion of the proceeds from our Holiday Craft Fair to put together care packages that will be given to those undergoing cancer treatment at Tufts Medical Center. We’d like to involve the children as much as possible. We will be walking a group (Limited to 25 students) of children down to the CVS to purchase hand lotion, lip balm, books, puzzles, gift cards, etc. The group back at the Program will be decorating bags and creating cards for the packages. There is a way for everyone to help with this community service project! A permission slip for this trip will be sent out via e-mail on Monday.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Our annual Family Picnic will be held on Tuesday, June 20th at Ware’s Cove on the Charles River in Auburndale. This is always a really fun way to end the year. The Program will close at 5:00 PM that day in order to allow everyone to get to the Cove so plan accordingly!

PEDP FOR 2017-2018

Confirmation letters will be sent out within the next week. There are still spots available in most programs so if you know someone who has not signed up yet, encourage them to give us a call or stop in.

MINNOWS MESSAGE from Kim Ryan, Minnows Coordinator

Early Minnows

The Early Minnows created some pretty amazing crafts during our Upcycle theme.  They made kazoos from paper towel tubes, candle holders from tin cans and clothespins, and cute bugs made from wine corks.  The options for upcycling are endless!  Our next theme, Farm Life, will certainly have a lot of fun projects and activities!  The Early Minnows have a field trip coming up at the end of May/early June.  More information on that will be coming soon!

Late Minnows

The Late Minnows have had tons of fun this month.  The warm weather has been welcomed by the kids and staff.  We are all excited to spend more time outside!  Our clubs for April have ended and a great time was had by all.  Miss Laurie P.’s club made beautiful changing pictures, Miss Nancy’s club made play dough out of marshmallow peeps! How cool!  My club did some amazing acting during Role Play Reader. I was so impressed by what good readers we have and how much they helped each other with some difficult words!

The Early Release Thursday is coming up fast on May 11th.  The Minnows have a trip to the Capron Park Zoo planned.  Please return the permission slip soon! You can reach me at kim@peirceedp.com

BARRACUDA BUZZ from Joanne Malouf, Barracudas Coordinator

With all of these April Showers I hope we will have a lot of May Flowers.  The Explorers will be seeing lots of flowers when they create a colorful floral arrangement under the guidance of the Temple Shalom Garden Club.  This will take place on Tuesday, May 2 here at Peirce.  This group spent a wonderful afternoon at the Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary on April 11.  The weather was perfect for viewing the wide variety of birds and pond life.  There were so many turtles sunning themselves on rocks and logs in the pond.  We spotted one turtle that was very close to a snake that did move around to check out the turtle.  When we checked back later, both were still living in harmony on the log.  Our upcycling theme saw many used items get turned into something new and many rainy days led to some great drawings by our creative Barracudas.  Cooking, as always, remained a popular activity. The Tuesday group participated in another team building activity where Chris led the kids in several group games.  The kids cheered for each other and shared disappointment when things didn’t go quite as planned.  Here’s hoping for more sunshine!

Please feel free to contact me at joanne@peirceedp.com with questions or concerns about your child or the Barracuda Program.

SHARK TALES from Rachel Bastarache, Sharks Coordinator

It feels like April has flown right by. The Sharks were busy upcycling soup cans into many different things like candle holders, wind chimes, and pencil cups. We turned old socks into stress balls and jewelry out of old newspaper! We have had some great conversations about ways things can be reused instead of being thrown away.  It was wonderful to see how interested the children are in helping the environment.

Swimming into the month of May, we will be combining with the Barracudas on Early Release Thursday, May 11th for some outdoor fun and games! More info will be coming in the near future. Going along with our Farm Life theme this month, the Sharks will be diving into some cooking with Ms. Rachel. We will be learning some old family recipes that I cooked growing up on a farm. Ms. Deb has some great projects heading our way for this month and Ms. Laurie D mentioned possibly some Origami farm animals may be coming our way too! Wow! Can’t wait for May to get started. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at rachel@peirceedp.com
