PEDP June Newsletter 2018

From Kathy’s desk…

Firstly, thanks to Joanne Lyons and Susan Lunin, former PEDP board members and members of the Temple Shalom Garden Club, for coordinating and teaching our Explorers how to create beautiful flower arrangements again for us this year!

Thanks also to all of you who participated in our “UNPLUGGED” day. It makes you really stop and think about what it’s like to live without power. Our hearts go out to our friends in Puerto Rico who are dealing with this challenge on a daily basis.

We have seen so much growth in our children and staff this year! Now we look forward to several year-end traditions…

CURRICULUM

Our theme this month will be “Time and Space”. The staff are planning all sorts of activities having to do with time machines, aliens, NASA, etc.

FIELD TRIPS

Barracuda/Shark Programs: Both Tuesday groups are heading to the “Scooper Bowl”  in Boston on Tuesday, June 5th. This is an all-you-can-eat ice cream festival that is a favorite trip every year. We are asking all children to wear a green t-shirt that day to make them more visible for our staff to spot them easily. The cost of the trip for non-Explorer/Adventurer children is $20.

Early Minnows:The A Group (Friday, June 8th) and the B Group (Wednesday, June 6th) are heading to the “Kids Place for Fun” in Needham where they will paint a plaster piece. The cost is $20.

CLASSES   The last “Coding” class will be held on June 14th.

FAMILY PICNIC

Come to our Annual PEDP Picnic and celebrate the end of a terrific year with us! It is going to be held on THURSDAY, JUNE 7TH at WARE’S COVE, a beautiful picnic area next to the Charles River here in Newton. PEDP will supply the charcoal for the grills, cooking utensils, water, condiments, and paper goods. Each family should bring their own main course to grill i.e. burgers, hot dogs, chicken, rolls, etc. We sent a Sign-Up Genius e-mail for all of you to sign up to bring a dish to share. ON THE DAY OF THE PICNIC, THE PROGRAM WILL BE CLOSING AT 5:00 P.M. If your child attends PEDP on Thursday, make sure that your pick-up person knows about this change. If you cannot make it here by 5:00, please arrange for another parent or sitter to pick up your child.  Please let us know who that person will be. Our regular late fees will be billed for any pick-ups past 5:00 that day.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

We will be having a SLIDE SHOW on Wednesday, June 13that 7:00 PM in the Peirce Auditorium! There will be pictures of all the PEDP children throughout the year set to some fun music. We’ll be sending an invite out soon!

 GRADUATING 5TH GRADERS!

We started a tradition several years ago of having our graduating 5thgraders leave their mark on PEDP in the form of a handprint on the wall outside the PEDP office. I’d like to ask our 5thgraders to come to PEDP on Tuesday, June 12th right at 8:15 a.m. so that we can do this fun project. We’ll be done in time for them to get up to class.

 STEP-UP DAY

For children who attend the late afternoon program on Wednesday, June 11th, we will be doing our own version of Step-Up Day!  Each of the grades moving up to a new fish group will get a glimpse of what next year holds in store for them.

MINNOWS MESSAGE from Kim Ryan, Minnows Coordinator

It’s hard to believe that the year is coming to an end!  This has been a great time for learning, building relationships and having fun.  I will certainly miss the first graders who will no longer be Minnows and will move up to the Barracudas and the kindergarteners who are not returning to PEDP.

Early Minnows

The Early Minnows had a great time with our theme of Sports and Games.  Mr. Sean tried his best to help the Celtics win with a Lebron Puppet craft and we made some footballs and basketball hoops, too!  The Early Minnows have a field trip to The Kids Place For Fun in Needham, While there they will be painting a plaster art piece.  The cost is $20 and the permission slip was sent out via email.  Please let me know if you need another one sent to you!

Late Minnows

As our year comes to an end, we celebrate with Wacky Water Day!  On Tuesday, June 5th we will be enjoying a lot of water games and an ice cream snack!  Please make sure your child brings the following to PEDP that day:

  • A bathing suit to change into after lunch
  • A towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Water shoes or sandals
  • a water bottle

Many of these things your child will already have since it is the same day as Color Day.

All year the minnows have been earning Minnow Money when given a shout-out by a PEDP staff member.  During the week of June 11th, they will be cashing in!  They will be able to choose from a variety of things depending on how much money they have–maybe a special snack, being Director for the day, extra gym or outside time and more!

It has really been a pleasure to be a part of all your children’s love, even if only for a short time.  I wish you all a wonderful summer of sun, memories and fun!

As always, feel free to contact me at kim@peirceedp.com

BARRACUDA BUZZ from Joanne Malouf, Barracudas Coordinator

Another year almost complete, my how time flies!  The Tuesday kids had a lot of fun with their May clubs. Kathy’s group created Bob’s Truck Stop. The kids ordered off the menu and the waiters and waitresses served them.  The snack was a delicious wrap, chips, and a cookie or brownie. The drink was pink lemonade. The kids were given some fake money so they could pay their tab. A lot of fun and some great lessons, too. Carol’s group rehearsed their play Cinderella: A Fractured Fairy Tale.  It was quite a show with costumes, props and scenery.  Not bad for only three weeks work!  Laurie’s group created some really cool things out of duct tape.  I loved the corner bookmarks. Dylan had his group working up a sweat as they worked on some fitness routines.  My group did a fabulous job hand sewing a stuffed dog.

The Tuesday group also had a group activity to help them work with others and communicate better.  They did a great job listening to what kind of group they needed to form.  Several children gave great directions to navigate a blindfolded friend through the field of Barracudas.  One child needed to step over another who was lying down and was guided to do this perfectly by her partner.  One last teambuilding activity is scheduled for June, a day of relay races.

Explorers Trip Program –The Explorers created beautiful Mother’s Day flower arrangements with the help of four members of the Temple Shalom Garden Club. The kids really showed off their creative side and the moms I saw with the arrangements loved them.  The last Explorers trip is Tuesday, June 5.  This is our annual trip to the Scooper Bowl, a Jimmy Fund event.  The kids will be able to try ice cream from a variety of vendors.  This is a great way to end the year.  We are asking the kids in this program to wear a green shirt. This will help us see them even better at the venue.  The Barracudas will graduate 28 third graders!  I think this is one of the largest classes we’ve had.  We wish them all the best as they move on to fourth grade. Have a great summer!

Please feel free to contact me at joanne@peirceedp.com with questions or concerns about your child or the Barracuda Program.

SHARK TALES from Rachel Bastarache, Sharks Coordinator

As we swim into the month of June, it’s crazy to think that anther school year has gone by. During the month of May, Mr. Sean taught the Sharks  how to make different travel games like a table soccer ball game out of a tissue box. Ms. Laurie D. dusted off some old games from home and introduced the kids to things like Chinese checkers and Skittles. On Wednesday May 7th, the Sharks matched up with the Minnows and helped them decorate beautiful flower pots and then planted flowers in them for a Mother’s day gift. It was great to watch them work together and be good role models for the younger kids. Also in May the Adventurers Trip group went to the New Art center where they walked through the beautiful gallery of art work from local artists. While there, they also got to learn how to create their own pinch pot clay houses. They all did a great job and they all showcased their different personalities.

There is a lot going on this month. On June 5th, the Adventurers trip group will be heading into Government Center for the Scooper Bowl! This field trip is open to all the Tuesday Sharks. June 19th the Sharks will be having their annual “Get Iced” special event. I will sending more details of this event as the date get closer.

On a bittersweet note, I want to wish the 21 graduating Sharks the best of luck in all their future adventures. It’s been amazing watching many of these children grow from little kindergarteners to the mighty 5th graders they are today. I look forward to their visits back to Peirce.

Thank you all for another great year! Hope you all have a fun, relaxing, safe summer!
