PEDP Newsletter June 2016

From Kathy’s Desk

June 2016

Time sure does fly. Over the year, the children have grown so much. Like my Walking Club this past month, they are ready to take on new challenges. Soon, we will send our fifth graders, many of whom have been with us for six years, on to middle school. We celebrate the independent thinkers they have become and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next! Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

CURRICULUM

Our last theme of the year is Detectives and Mysteries.

FIELD TRIPS

The Early Minnows (K) are going to the New England Mobile Book Fair on Wednesday 6/1 (Group B) and Friday 6/3 (Group A) for a scavenger hunt and a book to take home.

The Explorers Program will be headed to the Scooper Bowl in Boston on June 7th. All Barracudas and Sharks who attend PEDP on Tuesdays are invited to go on this trip provided they have filled out a permission slip. All-you-can-eat ice cream? The kids LOVE this trip.

FAMILY PICNIC

Come to our Annual PEDP Picnic and celebrate the end of a terrific year with us! It is going to be held on WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1st at WARE’S COVE, a beautiful picnic area next to the Charles River here in Newton. PEDP will supply the charcoal for the grills, cooking utensils, water, condiments, and paper goods. Each family should bring their own main course to grill i.e. burgers, hot dogs, chicken, rolls, etc. We ask that you also bring a dish to share with others such as: potato salad, pasta salad, tossed salad, or another side. There is a sign-up sheet posted at the dismissal area. ON THE DAY OF THE PICNIC, THE PROGRAM WILL BE CLOSING AT 5:00 P.M. If your child attends PEDP on Wednesday, make sure that your pick-up person knows about this change. If you cannot make it here by 5:00, please arrange for another parent or sitter to pick up your child. Please let us know who that person will be. Our regular late fees will be billed for any pick-ups past 5:00 that day.

GRADUATING 5TH GRADERS!

We started a tradition several years ago of having our graduating 5th graders leave their mark on PEDP in the form of a handprint on the wall outside the PEDP office. I’d like to ask our 5th graders to come to PEDP on Tuesday, June 7th right at 8:20 a.m. so that we can do this fun project. We’ll be done in time for them to get up to class.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

The last day of school will be Thursday, June 23rd. This will be a 12:00 PM Release. Peirce EDP will NOT be open that afternoon. ALL overdue payments must be in by the last day of school! This includes money owed for: extra hours, field trips, late pick-ups, calling fees, classes, and tuition.

TUITION DEPOSIT BILLS

If your child is attending PEDP next year and you have submitted your application, you will now receive a bill for the one-month deposit that is required. The deposit is applied to your last month’s tuition (June 2017). The bills will be put in your mail files next Tuesday so please remember to check your mail file. Any bills not picked up by June 10th will be mailed out through the USPS. Payment is due by June 17th. Be aware this is a very short turnaround time.

ANNUAL MEETING

Our annual meeting of the corporation will be held on Monday, June 6th at 7:00 PM. Please see me for the location if you are interested in attending.

I will be checking e-mail throughout the summer on a regular basis. You can also leave a message on our machine here at school but I only check that sporadically.

MINNOW MESSAGE from Kim Ryan, Minnows Coordinator

EARLY MINNOWS:

May brings the end of our Wild, Wild West theme.  The early Minnows were busy making rattlesnakes and cowboy hats, finding gold and riding off into the sunset with their trusty yardstick horses!  Detectives and Mysteries are on the way for June.  Think Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys and Harriet The Spy!

LATE MINNOWS:

We are finishing up our May clubs today and boy, were they fun!  Scavenger hunts, taffy pulling, team building, story writing and flower planting are just snippets of what happened during our clubs this month.  A special thanks to Miss Kathy for joining the Minnows this month!

On Tuesday June 7th, while the Sharks and Barracudas are away, the Minnows will play!  The ever exciting Wacky Water Day will continue the Minnows fun from Color Day.  A water battle, water balloons, giant bubbles and an ice cream snack!  Please make sure your child brings a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and some type of water shoes.

With our June theme being Detectives and Mysteries, it is time to dust off your game of CLUE to practice for the Minnow’s very own CLUE mystery day!  Details will be sent out soon!

It has been a pleasure watching your children thrive and grow this year.  I am sad to see the 1st graders move on to the Barracudas but excited to watch the kindergartners become 1st graders and to meet all our new kindergarten friends in September!  Have a safe, happy and exciting summer!!

As always, feel free to contact me at kim@peirceedp.com

BARRACUDA BUZZ from Joanne Malouf, Barracudas Coordinator

What a year!  We had some fun projects, delicious cooking and exciting science in the Barracudas Program this year.  We’ve played a lot of games and built tons of Lego and domino structures.  We had some great classes–old favorites and some great, new ones we tried.  Throw in some field trips and teambuilding events and there’s our year in a nutshell.  And we’re not finished yet!  We still have plenty of activities to keep us busy in June. We wish our 25 third graders well as they graduate out of the Barracudas Program and move on to the Sharks and we look forward to a new group of second graders joining us from the Minnows.  Have a wonderful summer!

As always, you can reach me at joanne@peirceedp.com

SHARK TALES from Rachel Bastarache, Sharks Coordinator

As the Sharks swim into the final month of school, we can look back and say, “Wow, what a year!” We swam so far and accomplished so much together. We did some great projects and activities. We have had many great special events like our Spooktacular Halloween, The Chinese New Year festival, and who could forget the Thanksgiving football game!  (The list goes on and on) Oh, but we are not done! We are going out with a BANG! OK, well… SPLASH! On June 16th, we will be having our “Cool as Ice” special event. Keep a lookout for more details to come! During this past month the Sharks have been doing clubs on Tuesdays. Their choices were Outdoor sports with Mr. Sean, Dance with Ms Lenni, Writing your own children’s book with Ms Rachel, Cake decorating with Ms. Maggie and Wall Art with Ms. Nancy. It has been tons of fun for all! In the next few weeks we will be graduating 25 AMAZING Sharks! As they swim off to a larger ocean we wish them all great success in whatever the future shall bring.

Hope you all have a great last month of school! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at rachel@peirceedp.com.

Have a fabulous summer!

Kathy
