PEDP November Newsletter 2016

Happy Halloween! Stay safe tonight! I am going to bed early because I was up so late last night watching my hometown Cubs in the World Series!

November is going to be BUSY!!!

CURRICULUM

Our theme this month will be CRAFTS FOR THE FAIR. Children and staff will be hard at work making gifts to sell at our Holiday Craft Fair (December 6th and 8th). This is a HUGE event for us—always one of our favorites!

 EARLY RELEASE DAY

Thursday, November 3rd is an early release day! We will be showing a movie on a HUGE screen (the outdoor one we had planned back in September which was canceled due to lack of sign-ups) in the gym. The kids voted on the movie. Disney Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur was the winner. It is Rated PG for Peril, Action, and Thematic Elements. (Usually, we only show G movies. However, this one didn’t have inappropriate language and most of them seem to have seen it already anyway.) The kids will also enjoy popcorn from West Newton Cinema during the movie. Showtime is 1:45 PM. It should be over by 3:30 if you need to pick up early that day.

 FIELD TRIPS

Explorers Group: Tuesday, November 8th – Launch Trampoline Park in Watertown

Join us Friday evening! And support PEDP with your purchase at vinodivino!

This Friday, November 4th, we have partnered with VinodiVino to host a Wine Tasting! An Evite was sent out but feel free to RSVP by e-mail or in person as well. We’ll have delicious finger foods to eat and some fabulous wines for tasting. Suggested donation: $20 per person. To make it even better, you can drop your kids (K-5) off with us while you are at the event! We’ll feed the kids dinner and show a movie. They’ll also have time to play board games and such. Information about the Kids Night In was sent via e-mail, too. Cost is $25 per child. What a bargain!

Also, going on now until Thanksgiving…. purchase wine/beer at VinodiVino, mention “Peirce Extended Day Program” and they will donate 10% of your purchase price to the Program!

MINNOWS MESSAGE from Kim Ryan, Minnows Coordinator

Early Minnows

The Early Minnows had a great time on their field trip to pick pumpkins this month! We were able to walk to the pumpkin patch and pick out fantastic pumpkins to carve, decorate or, according to a lot of the group A kids, bake pumpkin pie! A big thanks to Mr. Sean for pulling all the pumpkins back to Peirce in the wagon!

Now that it is getting colder, please be sure to pack warmer outdoor clothing as the Early Minnows go outside every day, weather permitting.

Late Minnows

The Late Minnows have been busy fish this month! Miss Laurie has been experimenting with some great science activities, like the walking rainbow and ooey, gooey slime and I’ve been doing some fun cooking projects like mac and cheese and Oreo bars! After snack the Minnows have been taking some time to relax and listen to a story. We have started reading to them for 10 minutes every day. Our first book is called Matilda! We hope for this to continue throughout the year so if you have any great chapter books to suggest or let us borrow, we would love to hear from you!  At the end of the day, we continue to do our Minnow Meetings where each child and teacher has the opportunity to give a shout out to someone else, for something they did or helped with. This is a great opportunity for them to learn about friendships and helping others. We have been really focusing on kindness and it is heartwarming to see all the Minnows working together and including one another!

Homework seems to be in full swing with the Minnows, at least the for first graders! If you would like your child to be working on homework while at PEDP, please let me know and I will add them to our homework list. If you have any questions, you can reach me at kim@peirceedp.com

BARRACUDA BUZZ from Joanne Malouf, Barracudas Coordinator

The Barracudas had their first team building activity on October 13.  The kids were put into four groups.  Each group had three hula-hoops.  The entire group needed to get from one side of the basketball court to the other by only stepping in the hoops.  All the groups figured out how many kids fit in a hoop and how far to place the empty hoop so all teammates could make it into that empty hoop.  The kids encouraged each other and worked well together.  All the groups made it across on their first try! Following the activity we had a great conversation about what the kids noticed and how they interacted together during the activity. They noticed everyone working together and having fun. We will be planning more team building exercises throughout the year.

Explorers Trip Program – The kids had a lot of fun at Castle Island.  Several kids got to see inside the fort walls before the doors were closed for the day.  They were amazed by the size of the cannons.  Although it was cloudy that day, there was a bit of time when the clouds lifted enough to see the planes flying over us as they took off from Logan Airport.  Don’t forget to send in the Launch waiver for the first of our two November trips.  Children should also be wearing socks and comfortable clothing that day. Please feel free to contact me at joanne@peirceedp.com with questions or concerns about your child or the Barracuda Program.

SHARK TALES from Rachel Bastarache, Sharks Coordinator

The sharks created a new species this month, the Sharkbird! They had such a fun time coming up with all these crazy combos painting these new creatures with Ms. Deb. They also made beautiful birdhouses with Ms Kristeena, Mr Sean jumped on the Pokemon train and has been teaching the kids how to draw the different Pokemon birds. We will be ending our month with a Halloween special event on Monday, October 31st. We have invited the kids to bring their costumes to change into when they get to EDP. We will be doing some fun Halloween activities outside. If you are planning on picking up your child early that day to get ready for trick or treating we should be done by 4:30 at the latest.

Swimming into November, we will be busy Sharks crafting away for the craft fair! We will also be preparing for our annual “Thanksgiving 4th verse 5th grade Super Bowl”. This will be on Tuesday, November 22. I will be sending out more information at about this event as the date gets closer.

How’s homework going? Let me know if you feel that your child might need more time to get their work done. Please let me know if you have any question or concerns. You can email me any time at rachel@peirceedp.com
